I don't know the answer, but I assume your confirmed that the [field name]
is the correct case?

The docs page here: https://mapserver.org/mapfile/style.html#style does not
indicate that [attribute] is an accepted format for PATTERN in the current
Mapserver.

You might get a quicker response on the mapserver list, and it would be
helpful to specify the version of Mapserver you are using,
