Hello YK,
Welcome to MS4W !
The installer is designed to help get moving fast with MapServer,
automatically setting up the Apache web server, MapServer & all of its
libraries, and also optionally installs 40+ different mapfiles, services
and data, as well as several front-end applications to manage those
services.
Regarding your errors of no desktop shortcut or localhost problems, I
have seen this before when the installer has trouble using port 80, as
Apache by default uses that port, and sometimes machines already have
port 80 in use (through applications such as Skype, IIS, etc.). You can
re-run the MS4W installer and choose a different port, or :
Instead of the installer, you can instead download the .zip and extract
it to your C:/ drive root (so then you would have C:/ms4w ), and open a
command prompt, cd into ms4w, and then execute "setenv.bat" followed by
executing "apache-install.bat"
That should allow you to install MS4W's Apache service. You can modify
the Apache port by editing C:/ms4w/Apache/conf/httpd.conf (see around
line#52)
You mentioned "wwwroot" folder, which does not exist for Apache, but you
can also set that directory in that same file (see the "DocumentRoot"
parameter in C:/ms4w/Apache/conf/httpd.conf )
These steps for installing MS4W are described in more detail in the
README at
https://ms4w.com/README_INSTALL.html#extracting-ms4w-for-the-first-time
