Hi,
I would have a try with OpenJPEG JPEG2000 driver. That is open source. I would not involve Mapserver into this but use just gdal_translate but if you need a web service then WCS service with JPEG2000 outputformat should work. ECW and MrSID would most probably work, and for using them you would most probably need an expensive license.

Aihe: [MS4W-Users] Using MS4W / GDAL to create very small images for use in an old GPS unit.
Hello,
I would like to update the air photos that we have on an older GPS unit. Currently the GPS unit has a few small MrSID air photos. I need to create a very small file as the unit is old and has little RAM. I created a GeoTIFF with a very aggressive JPEG compression (30%). I was happy with size of the file and the relative quality. Unfortunately, when I loaded the layer into my GPS unit the unit complained that it could not load compressed images, which is funny because MrSID files are already compressed.
I am wondering if there is a way to create very small files in a format other than Tiff. My understanding is that the unit can load ECW, JPEG, JPEG2000, MrSid, and GeoTIFF files.
Thank You!
Sincerely,
Mark Volz, GISP
